Your Rights as a Young Person

The UK government has to report to the UN on how well it is putting the Convention on the Rights of the Child into practice.

After the first report in 1994, the UN told the UK government that they should be doing more to:

  • put the "best interests of the child" at the heart of local and central government policies
  • make the Convention widely known to both adults and children
  • ensure that children get taught their rights in school
  • implement Article 12 so that young people's opinions count
  • increase the participation of children in decisions affecting them, including within the family and the local community

In the second report to the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child by the United Kingdom in 1999, the government claims to have done this. What do you think?
